The company's Windows 10 chief has tweeted that developing new features and hardware for the Mobile version of the OS was no longer a "focus".

Joe Belfiore added that he had also switched to Android himself.

Windows 10 Mobile tried to attract users by letting them run the same "universal apps" on both their PCs and handsets, but the concept failed to catch on.

The OS accounted for just 0.03% of the global market - based on smartphone shipments - between April and June, according to research company IDC.

The market intelligence provider said the news had been a long time coming.

"There wasn't a wide range of devices running Windows 10 Mobile, so it wasn't attractive to retailers or operators," said IDC's Francisco Jeronimo.

"And from a consumer perspective, the operating system didn't provide as good an experience as Android or iOS."

Mr Belfiore began a series of tweets on Sunday by discussing the recent launch of a test version of Microsoft's Edge web browser for Android and iOS - the latest in a series of releases of its core software for rival mobile platforms.

He then went on to respond to questions about whether there was any point sticking with Windows 10 Mobile.

He said that while Microsoft would support the "many companies" that had adopted the platform, he had switched to Android for the diversity of its apps and hardware.

"Of course we'll continue to support the platform... bug fixes, security updates, et cetera," he said.

"But building new features or hardware is not the focus."

Mr Belfiore posted Microsoft had tried "very hard" to incentivise other companies to release universal apps - even writing their software for them in some cases - but the number of users had been too low for most to bother.

The announcement comes a week after HP had said it no longer planned to release further Windows 10 Mobile handsets, and a fortnight after Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates disclosed that he had already made the switch to Android.

However, some manufacturers - including the UK's Wileyfox and Germany's TrekStor - had unveiled new models powered by Windows 10 Mobile as recently as last month.

"Most Microsoft applications are now available and supported on other mobile operating systems," said Mr Jeronimo.

"After Satya Nadella took over [as chief executive], that clearly became the strategy - and after that happened what incentive was there to buy a Windows-powered phone?"

However, Microsoft may not have given up on powering smartphones altogether.

Earlier this year, Windows Central reported the company was working on a new version of Windows 10 - codenamed Andromeda - that would run on all types of computer and make it possible for third-party apps to adapt without having to code a special "universal" version.

It said the OS was due for release next year, but suggested the code would not be offered as an upgrade to existing Windows 10 Mobile devices.

A spokeswoman for Microsoft was unable to provide further comment.

A bombshell new report says it doesn't matter how good your password is, or what other security settings you have – if you're using WiFi, it's possible for someone to spy on every single thing you do.

And it affects essentially every WiFi network being used, from your private home set-up to the one at your local coffee shop.

The discovery of this serious new issue comes from Mathy Vanhoef, a Belgian computer security researcher. Vanhoef published the findings Monday on a dedicated website, KRACKattacks.com.

The flaw lets people "read information that was previously assumed to be safely encrypted," Vanhoef wrote. "This can be abused to steal sensitive information such as credit card numbers, passwords, chat messages, emails, photos, and so on." 

And the scope is potentially huge: "The attack works against all modern protected Wi-Fi networks," he said.

How it works

We're going to keep this part brief, because it gets very technical very quick.

It concerns the use of "WPA2," a proven method of protecting data on a network. (You've probably seen it when setting up WiFi at a new house or apartment.) WPA2 has been used to make WiFi connections secure for a decade now – it's the "modern standard," Consumerist explains, because it was thought to be well-protected.

The flaw Vanhoef discovered is in the core function of WPA2, during what's referred to as a "4-way handshake." The WiFi access point and the device that's connecting to it talk to each other to make sure credentials match. The device gets issued a new, fresh encryption key, which secures any data that gets sent over that connection (so web browsing, streaming, etc.).

But there's a way for an attacker to have the WiFi access point and your device redo part of that "handshake" process. It forces the device to take an already-used encryption key – not a fresh new one. That gives the attacker an opening to spy on any data that goes over the connection.

Apple's royalty payments account for about half Imagination's revenues.

Shares fell 165p to 103p, valuing the company at about £250m - down from about £765m before the announcement was made on Monday morning.

Imagination said Apple, its largest customer, would stop using its products in "15 months to two years".

Apple is developing its own technology, but Imagination said this would be difficult without infringing patents.

Apple has told Imagination that it is "working on a separate, independent graphics design in order to control its products and will be reducing its future reliance on Imagination's technology".

Imagination, like the UK's ARM Holdings, is at the forefront of computer chip technology globally. ARM was sold last year to Japan's Softbank, a deal criticised as selling out of the UK's winners.

The Financial Times reported last year that Apple, which owns 8% of the UK company, had held talks about buying Imagination.

Kaby Lake will add native USB 3.1 Generation 2 Ports, whereas Skylake motherboards require a third-party add-on chip in order to provide USB 3.1 (10 Gbit/s) ports. Kaby Lake will add native HDCP 2.2 support, along with full fixed function HEVC Main10/10-bit and VP9 10-bit hardware video decoding.

Before Kaby Lake, Cannon Lake was scheduled to launch this year. However, Intel seems to change its mind and went on with Kaby Lake. The 10nm-based Cannon Lake was scheduled to launch at 2017.

What Is That Little Cylinder on the Cable of Your Charger?

Well, it might look like a useless addition, but without this little thing, your lappy wouldn’t be able to function properly. Here’s why.

That little cylinder is called a Ferrite Bead.

The cylindrical device is known as a ferrite bead, which is nothing but an inductor (passive electric component) that suppresses high-frequency noise in electronic circuits.

The ferrite bead isolates your laptop from electromagnetic noise, either from the waves that are picked up by the wire or from the existing noise in the AC-DC converter or the AC line.

While you find this cylindrical module common for laptop cords or other electronic devices such as printers, you won’t find this extra piece on other chargers like that of a cell phone. This is because unlike cell phones or other devices that need to be charged (i.e., your iPad or tablet), laptops tend to have many moving parts working at once. This can create a lot of chaos and disorder if the parts aren’t working together, even capable of producing radio frequencies. The case around the laptop charger dulls those vibrations and stops them from causing any interference.

Ferrite beads are made of a hollow disc, an iron oxide material with magnetic properties. It helps to prevent the wire behave on over floating current like aerials. As a result, all this metal wire can potentially serve as an antenna by absorbing or emitting any radiation while passing current around it. Without this ferrite bead, the radiation emitted by the wires could cause interference with other electronic objects around them which act as receptors of this radiation, causing, for example, noise in speakers.

This is why you find those small cylindrical modules at the end of the cables.
